We've gone Footie Mapapptastic!!!!

Bing maps are also ‘kicking’ things off by adding some new apps to the ‘team’ (groan).

Launching today are two World Cup Map Apps; the Home Turf Finder and the World Cup Map App, which features live updates on the map throughout competition in South Africa. It combines a variety of features ranging from live scores, standings, fixtures and news, as well as freshly loaded South African stadium imagery and World Cup tweets.

In the WC app, the world view allows users the ability to click into each participating team to see the latest updates as they happen. We have partnered with FIFA (the official Football association) to incorporate live feed information overlaid on the unique Silverlight experience; plus if you need any further details, links are included to take you to the appropriate FIFA.com page.

As usual you can access it directly via the map app gallery or directly. The short url (www.bing.com/maps/world-cup) will be available on 6/15 next week.

World Cup Map App features in detail:

  • Official team updates on the map: fixtures, results, and league standings as they happen. Keep in check with who your team is playing next and how the Group is progressing
  • FIFA news: read up on the latest competition news, updated every 2-5 minutes. Article snippets are updated frequently with links to the full story on Fifa.com
  • Map of the game venues: using the new imagery loaded specifically for the competition, zoom in for the new aerial and synth view across South Africa
  • Photosynths of South Africa: Explore numerous synths of the region. Don’t forget you can submit your own World Cup related synths directly to Photosynth.net for some great exposure
  • World Cup Twitter: Catch what people are saying around the world with the Twitter feed, plus activate the Twitter app to map tweets as they happen

A big thanks to all of those involved in getting this out the door on time, and with the recent public release of the Bing Map App SDK it’s a great opportunity to showcase what is possible with Bing maps.

Unfortunately we couldn’t fit in a guide to the offside rule that would probably require another app entirely…

Good luck!
