Today we released a new study that reveals how technology has
influenced people’s perceptions of beauty, which could be the reason why Brad and Angeline Jolie – one of
Hollywood’s hottest couples – have now been replaced by quirky celebrities and
public figures at the nation’s favourite beauties.

The study reveals 10.7 million Brits (almost 28 per cent of the
population) think Uma Thurman and Cate Blanchett are more beautiful than
Angelina Jolie. Additionally, 30 per cent (11.5 million) believe that James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe
and Sherlock Holmes star, Benedict Cumberbatch are more beautiful than Brad
Pitt.

It’s not just actors Brits see as being more beautiful – 1.1 million
think Ed Miliband is more beautiful than Brad and 2 million say comedienne Dawn
French beats Angelina in the beauty stakes.

The study explores how humans rely on visual instincts and highlights
just how important they are when making decisions about what to like and what
not to like. What’s more, 58 per cent
of Brits believe the internet is a key influencer in what they consider to be
beautiful, as it allows users to see and know more about what is happening
around the world and therefore opens their minds to new ways of thinking.

However, beauty and first
impressions are not the only concerns to consider, the study shows visual
instincts also impact how online users engage with companies online.  When shopping online, more than a quarter of
us (27%) make up decisions about whether we want buy from a company within one
minute of visiting a website, citing hard navigation (37%) and an unattractive
site (23%) as the things that put them off most quickly.

The Bing team realise that when it comes to searching online, beautiful
design is as important as providing information.   This is the premise
that our search engine has been built on, from including beautiful images on
the homepage each day to our amazing image search engine to Visual Search galleries where users can browse through
pictures and get visually organised information about subjects from dog breeds
to cocktails to celebrities.
