Hoovers Puts Business Demographic Information on the (Bing) Map

Hoovers, a Dun & Bradstreet Company, just launched a new beta mapping feature on their site that allows you to lookup businesses and visualize demographic information on and around a respective company. For those who don’t know, Hoovers offers proprietary business information through the Internet, data feeds, wireless devices, and co-branding agreements with other online services. The Hoover’s Web site features a database of information on more than 30 million corporations and organizations, and more than 35 million people.

So, where does Bing Maps come in?

  1. Go to dnbhoovers.com and log in.
  2. Search for a business, any business.
  3. Click the respective result.
  4. Under the “Company Description” table, click the “View Locations on a US Map” link to launch the Bing Maps experience. 

The application is JAM-PACKED with demographic information! Check out the different data layers that exist on this map that you can view with just a simple mix and match of pull down menus:

Hoover’s Industry Layers – These data are provided at the state and county levels, depending on the map’s current zoom level.

  • Company Count – The total number of companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’).  
  • Aggregate Employee Growth – The total employee growth for all companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’).
  • Aggregate Income – The total annual income of all companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’); provided as millions USD.
  • Aggregate Revenue – The total revenue of all companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’); provided as millions USD.  
  • Aggregate Revenue Growth – The total revenue growth for all companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’); provided as millions USD.  
  • Average Employees – The average number of employees (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’).  
  • Average Income – The average annual income for companies (in the currently applicable ‘Primary Industry’); provided as millions USD.

  • Avg. Annual Household Expenditures – 2008 – Estimates the average of total money spent annually in a household in the given areas identified on the map (dependent upon zoom level).
  • Average Unemployment Level – Percentage of people unemployed in the given areas identified on the map (dependent upon zoom level).

Other Business Data Layers – These data are provided only at the state level, regardless of the map’s current zoom level.

  • Business Tax Climate – 2008 & 2009  – Measures how each State’s tax laws affect economic performance. The higher the score, the more favorable a State’s tax system is for business.
  • Average Energy Price – Estimates the average price of energy per state, provided as nominal dollars per million BTU.
