Today, Wyndham Worldwide Hotels launched their hotel reservation system using Bing Maps for visualizing where in the world all of their nearly 7,000 hotels are located – that’s a lot of hotels! And, they’re running under the guise of a number of different brands – Wyndham®, Ramada®, Days Inn®, Super 8®, Wingate® by Wyndham, Baymont Inn & Suites®, Microtel Inns and Suites®, Hawthorn Suites®, Howard Johnson®, Travelodge® and Knights Inn® – and a lot of register marks. All of the respective hotel web sites have now been transitioned over to using Bing Maps!
The new application uses Bing Maps as a part of the search results for locating a hotel, as well as, the hotel details page. They also added some simple and intuitive features to make the map experience better for their users. “Drag Map” is on by default which is the expected behavior for an AJAX map. The “Drag to Navigate Map” button is slick – it allows you to fly around the map by holding down the left mouse button and simply moving the mouse. The “Drag to Zoom” button enables the ability to draw a zoom box on the map with the left mouse button and zoom to the respective bounding area. The last two are zoom controls which are redundant with the navigation control. Also, notice the tabbing feature if in the case that you want to contact the hotel (via phone) directly.
You’ll notice the driving directions are still powered by MultiMap which Microsoft acquired a little over a year ago. I expect good things from Wyndham coming with this migration to Bing Maps.
